What’s my story, you ask?
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, I fell in love with Colorado during a family vacation. After earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling and Women’s Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, I packed up everything I owned (all of which fit in a tiny Toyota station wagon) and headed out to Boulder in 1980. I’ll never forget cresting Davidson Mesa and seeing our beautiful town and stunning mountain backdrop spread out before me. I’ve been happy to call it home ever since.
For a while, I worked as a baker, and I still love to bake for family and friends. Soon, though, I resumed my counseling path and earned my Master’s Degree in Professional Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1985, where I was bestowed the Graduate Dean’s Citation for Excellence.
To broaden my experience and education, I moved to the Boston area for five years after graduate school. It broke my heart to leave my beloved Rocky Mountains, but, as is often the case, my heart opened up and I fell in love with the ocean and the people and the fascinating history of the New England coast. During my time there, I worked at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, and did an intensive post-graduate therapy internship, as well.
I returned to Boulder in 1990, and lived with my parents, who had retired out here. Sadly, both of them died within a few years of my return. Caring for them, and dealing with all their death entailed increased my interest in working with others going through this journey.
After several years of working at a family planning clinic, I opened my private practice in 1995. I served as a bereavement counselor at Hospice, volunteered at Boulder County AIDS Project, and was on the Advisory Board at Moving to End Sexual Assault. I took a sabbatical for several years, during which time I raised my child and continued to volunteer throughout the community.
In 2015, I re-opened my practice under the name, “From the Heart Counseling & Legacy Services.” Trained by Celebrations of Life, and the Birren Institute, I expanded my services to include helping people focus in on what has been meaningful to them and find a way to share it with the people they love.
I am happily married to a lovely man who shares my interest in family history, among other things, and we have one teenage daughter. Besides my work, I enjoy photography, playing marimba, cooking and baking, and hiking with my Golden Retriever, Ollie.
